The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary is an assembly of many research labs that focus on the functioning of ecosystems and the evolution of species. One half of our professors work on ecology of whole ecosystems, individual organisms, communities, and biogeochemistry. The other half of our faculty study the evolution, biogeography, and physiology of species. Our faculty and graduate students pursue basic research questions with conservation and societal implications. Graduate students are encouraged to develop their own research plans while working with their faculty supervisors, other professors, and fellow students to produce original research.
Students admitted to E&EB are guaranteed five years of full tuition, stipend support, summer stipend support, and health insurance during their PhD programs. We make this guarantee by ensuring that students have teaching assistantships which provide a stipend, and by helping students secure internal and external fellowships. Through Cornell and other funding sources, most E&EB students have fellowship for at least one year during their PhD program. Our community supports learning and collaboration, and provides a positive atmosphere for ecological and evolutionary research.
